Project Description
The Allam Diabetes Centre is designed for Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust & main funder Dr Allam (entrepreneur & philanthropist), to create a positive architectural statement at Hull Royal Infirmary, Anlaby Road, an important gateway into the City.
Our design rationalises the shapes of organs affected by diabetes.
A ground floor reception is at human scale for a gentle approach. This opens into a large atrium with two floors for research & consulting rooms, offices, stores & a garden roof terrace.
The brief was for a stand-out landmark and its twin to be the Endoscopy Clinic at Castle Hill Hospital.
Straight lines are easier to construct but our curved design creates a salutogenic effect to help patients feel better.
The architectural presence conveys an expression of cultural & civic values, in particular the importance of the NHS.
The porcelain cladding (biodegradable material) is a metaphoric skin to protect the organs. The stylised concept gets elegant results with golden window reveals, glazed atriums & powder coated windows.
The main strategy for sustainability of the building is the ventilation - the 3 stacks ventilates the building naturally.
