Project Description
Light is all we see. The importance of light in our habitat is taken for granted unless there is disruption of visibility. The grade II listed arcade witnessed the modern life in the heart of London. Its rich historical value and impressive architectural details were largely undermined, due to overly bright electric lighting with excessive diffuseness. Existing indiscriminate lighting was not just unpleasant, but also pull people away for lack of assurance of privacy. Lighting for refurbishing this heritage employed a hierarchical strategy to highlight various architectural details. The central dynamic feature pendant created non-repetitive visual experiences to draw people in. The subtle ambient lighting and dancing light patterns excites people’s nerve and reflects the rhythm of central London. The balance of light and shadow provides comfortable navigation. As a result, the spatial usage is largely improved. Passers-by frequently stop to frame the space and in turn attracts more people. The lighting successfully transformed the negative public space into favorable habitat and retail destiny. It is a place for people to gather, relax and be inspired.
