Project Description
The project is situated in a local shopping arcade in Hong Kong. North Point Alliance Church runs this community centre, providing services to local families in the neighborhood.
As suggested by the client, the design concept for the centre is about shelter or protection. Curved arches or canopies are created throughout the centre forming alcove spaces in different sizes and functions. They provide a sense of security or protection and form hideaway places where people can rest and gather. These symbolize God’s protection and provision for the Israelites while they were in the wilderness before entering the promised land.
Arch shape is also a symbol of the rainbow, which represents God’s promise of peace after the flood of Noah. Pastel colors are used against a soft natural timber finish as background, creating a warm and light-hearted atmosphere where both adults and children can enjoy.
Inside the main hall, the centerpiece is the stage backdrop. The trapezium form symbolizes the tabernacle as the tent of God’s dwelling with the Israelites in the wilderness. The LED light panel above is like a canopy that symbolizes the glory and protection of God from above.
